Kalvin Phillips has given his thoughts on Leeds United’s chances of staying in the Premier League to the Daily Mail.

Leeds are currently 16th in the top-flight, five points above the relegation zone.

They’re just one point behind 15th-placed Southampton and four behind 11th-placed Crystal Palace.

Yet, it’s fair to say things haven’t been going well recently, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side losing their last three matches and conceding 14 goals in the process.

It’s no coincidence that Phillips hasn’t been on the pitch for any of those games, as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

The fact that he’s still expected to be out for some time is concerning for Leeds fans, given his influence on the side.

However, the England 2020/21 Men’s Player of the Year still thinks the Whites can stop their current slide and ultimately beat the drop.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Phillips told the Daily Mail after being asked about the bid to avoid relegation. “We weren’t the best team last year. We’re not the worst this year.”

“We have a very good chance of staying up. Once we correct a few things, like concentrating a little bit more at the end of a game, I think the points will start coming in.”

Bielsa may not be a fan of signing long-term contracts but he’s already vowed to fight to the end and it’s probably good news for Leeds that their Boxing Day clash with Liverpool has been postponed.

A trip to Anfield had the potential to damage confidence levels further and the fewer matches they play right now when there’s a host of players out injured, the better.

Now there’s the prospect of consecutive home fixtures against a resurgent but also injury-hit Aston Villa and fellow strugglers Burnley, with some points important to end 2021 and start 2022 on a high.
