Tottenham have reportedly targeted a January move for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, who Spurs tried to sign in the summer transfer window.

According to ABC Sevilla, the north London side have reignited their interest in the centre-back, who has a release clause of €80m (£68m).

As per the report, Chelsea are also keen on the defender, who will likely only be sold if a club can match Sevilla’s asking price.

Tottenham’s managing director of football Fabio Paratici was eager to sign Kounde in the summer transfer window.

However, as reported by Marca four months ago, the France international rejected a move to the Premier League side, with the defender eager to play UEFA Champions League football.

Indeed, Tottenham are, as of this morning, no longer competing in Europe. And with Sevilla unlikely to accept a lowball offer for Kounde, there’s a strong chance that the north London side will once again miss out on the 23-year-old.

Creative midfielder more important for Tottenham than Kounde

The centre-back will likely be on Spurs’ radar for most of 2022. However, Tottenham need to improve other areas of the squad before going in for Kounde a second time.

A lack of creativity has been a huge issue in the team. And Antonio Conte’s side should be addressing this issue over their defence, with the club already spending big on the position in the previous winder under Nuno Espirito Santo.
