Scottish Premiership champions Rangers will cancel Josh McPake’s Morecambe loan with director Ross Wilson ‘desperate’ to find the winger a club where he can play more regularly, as reported by the Daily Record.

A troublesome ankle injury means McPake has missed every one of Morecambe’s last ten League One fixtures.

But even when the Scotland U21 international was fit and available, he was finding regular minutes hard to come by.

McPake started just three times in his first two months under former Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson.

And, according to the Record, Rangers director Ross Wilson is set to exercise the clause in McPake’s contract, allowing the Glasgow giants to terminate his season-long loan deal during the January transfer window.

Have Rangers made the right call with Josh McPake?

Wilson, the former Southampton chief, is ‘desperate’ to find a club where the club’s 2019 Academy Player of the Year can shine.

McPake could even make a drop down the divisions with a trio of fourth-tier clubs – Barrow, Tranmere Rovers and ambitious, underperforming Salford City – all interested.

McPake did impress during a brief spell in League Two last term, scoring four goals in 23 games for a newly-promoted Harrogate Town outfit.

“His talent is unbelievable at times,” Harrogate manager Simon Weaver said after McPake scored a dramatic late-winner in a 2-1 victory over Bradford in April.

“If he combines that with full-on energy and tenacity, then the sky is the limit for him. (His goal was) a moment of genius.”

The jet-heeled youngster was linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs when he was rising through the ranks at Auchenhowie, including Liverpool and Borussia Monchengladbach (Record).

It remains to be seen whether McPake can build on that early promise and force his way into a Rangers side now coached by Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Gers are not short of talented wide options after all.

Bologna’s Andreas Skov Olsen or Anderlecht’s Francis Amuzu, meanwhile, could join Ianis Hagi, Ryan Kent and Scott Wright in the winter window.
