Some Newcastle United fans on social media have been reacting after it was reported by Ian McGarry that they’re willing to pay Jesse Lingard £200,000-a-week to join the club.

What’s the story?

It was reported last week that the Magpies are willing to make Lingard their highest-paid player ever, trumping the £100,000-a-week that Miguel Almiron earns right now

However, McGarry is now led to believe that the figure Newcastle are willing to pay for the midfielder is a whopping £200,000-a-week.

“It is our understanding at the Transfer Window Podcast, that Lingard, who turns 29 next week, may well get a nice birthday present from Newcastle’s new owners in that they are willing to compensate him leaving Man United and making it a hat-trick for United’s that he’s played for after his loan spell at West Ham, and giving him £200,000 a week in order to make that switch,” McGarry said.

Massive money for Lingard

Understandably, Newcastle fans had some reservations about this idea.

£200,000-a-week is absolutely huge money, especially for a player who can’t even break into Manchester United’s starting XI.

Yes, Lingard is a talented footballer. He’s an England international who has more than proven himself at Premier League level, but £200,000-a-week is just too much for a player who isn’t considered one of the best in the division.

It’s not our money and Newcastle are free to spend their cash however they like, but some Magpies supporters aren’t best pleased with the idea of splashing out on Lingard like this.

We can completely understand where they’re coming from as well. If you’re going to give a player £200,000-a-week, you want a bona fide superstar, not a player who, with all due respect, is a Manchester United cast-off.
