Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Ian McGarry has claimed that Newcastle United are ready to pay Jesse Lingard £200,000-a-week to join the club.

It was reported last week that the Magpies are willing to make Lingard their highest-paid player ever, trumping the £100,000-a-week that Miguel Almiron earns right now

It was reported that Lingard could earn more than that amount at Newcastle, but now, McGarry is claiming that the Magpies are willing to double their club record in terms of weekly wages.

What’s been said about Lingard?

McGarry shared what he knows about Lingard and Newcastle.

“So, interestingly you mentioned Jesse Lingard, Duncan. He has resisted Ed Woodward’s invitation to talk about a contract extension. You also mentioned Newcastle United. It is our understanding at the Transfer Window Podcast, that Lingard, who turns 29 next week, may well get a nice birthday present from Newcastle’s new owners in that they are willing to compensate him leaving Man United and making it a hat-trick for United’s that he’s played for after his loan spell at West Ham, and giving him £200,000 a week in order to make that switch,” McGarry said.

“They can kind of justify that on the basis that there’ll be a nominal fee, or if they wait until next summer, no fee whatsoever.”

Worth the money?

£200,000-a-week is massive money, but would Lingard be worth it?

Well, when you look at the calibre of player earning that much in the Premier League right now, you’d have to say no.

The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Fabinho, Bernardo Silva and Heung-Min Son all don’t earn that much, but of course, you also have to factor in that they were signed for substantial transfer fees, while Lingard may be available for a bargain.

Lingard would certainly help Newcastle in the short-term. After all, he’s been described as ‘outstanding’ by Roy Keane in the past, but if they pay him £200,000-a-week, in a couple of years they could look back at this as something of a mistake.
