Clermont Foot striker Mohamed Bayo has no regrets about a failed £7 million move to Premier League giants West Ham United, speaking to the Ligue 1 website.
If you wanted to make a list of the strikers West Ham have been linked with since selling Sebastien Haller to Ajax 11 months ago, well, you’d more paper than the shelves of Clinton Cards.
And many more.
Bayo, too, is rumoured to have admirers at the London Stadium.
The Sun believeS West Ham submitted a £7 million offer for a Guinea international who, as recently as 2020, was plying his trade in the French non-league for USL Dunkerque.
Bayo has enjoyed a Jamie Vardy style rise to prominence over the last 18 months or so, firing Clermont to promotion before taking Ligue 1 by storm.
Luring the late-blooming 23-year-old across the Channel will be no easy task, however, with the ink still drying on the new three-year contract Bayo signed in October.
Is Mohamed Bayo heading to the Premier League?
“The prospect of having chances, opportunities to score goals, that made me think,” Bayo said when explaining why he opted to stay at Clermont Foot.
“I know the club, I know my teammates. That played (a part) in my thinking, that’s for sure.
“For the moment, yes (staying put) is clearly a good choice.”
Only three players in the whole of Ligue 1 have scored more times than Bayo (eight in 16 games) so far this term.
If you said Kylian Mbappe and Wissam Ben Yedder, well played. Bonus points for those of you who guessed that Ludovic Ajorque of Strasbourg was also part of that exclusive club.
