Everton have parted ways with Marcel Brands – and it sounds like he wasn’t a huge fan of the decision to appoint Rafael Benitez as manager.
Everton announced at almost midnight – a strange time to confirm a major departure – that Brands has gone.
Brought in as director of football in 2018, Brands had excelled at AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven.
Brands’ time at Everton didn’t go so well, though it’s unclear just how much power the Dutchman actually had at Goodison Park.
Details are now emerging about Brands’ frustrations at Everton, including over their managerial decision last summer…
Brands wanted Potter at Everton, not Benitez
Everton ended up bringing in Rafael Benitez as their new manager in the summer.
It turns out that Brands seemingly didn’t want Benitez at all, and had pushed for a different appointment.
The Liverpool Echo claim that Brands wanted Graham Potter appointed rather than Benitez.
Farhad Moshiri was set on Benitez though, overruling Brands in the process.

Branded a ‘genius’ by some of his players at Swansea City, Potter is an exciting coach.
Seen as exciting, fresh and innovative, Potter has completely changed Brighton’s style of play.
Now one of the Premier League’s most interesting sides, Potter’s work at Brighton has been staggering.
Potter’s vibrant style is a far cry from the brand of football Benitez is serving up.
Brands leaves Everton with more questions than answers, but many Toffees fans will wish he had managed to bring in Potter instead of Benitez.
