Aston Villa did make informal contact to try and make Graham Potter their new manager, but there is little chance of bringing him to Villa Park.
That’s according to the Express and Star, who claim that Villa initiated dialogue – presumably with Potter’s agency – to explore a move.
However, it’s claimed that the chances of landing Potter are ‘remote’, and Villa have seemingly moved on.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is now thought to be Villa’s top target after the sacking of Dean Smith.
Potter has impressed at Brighton and will be wanted for almost any Premier League vacancy, but it sounds like Villa have been given no encouragement.
Potter made strange Aston Villa comments
In Birmingham, you’re either a Villa fan or a Birmingham City fan. Sure, there may be some West Brom, Wolves or even Walsall fans knocking about, but it’s usually Villa or Birmingham.
In the case of Potter, he managed to support both.

Potter admitted in January of last year that he grew up supporting Villa.
However, he ended up having an affinity for Birmingham City too once he joined their youth ranks.
Potter claimed to like both teams, which will no doubt seem bizarre to many Villa and Birmingham fans.
Branded a ‘genius’ by one of his former Swansea City players, Potter is seemingly on a path to stardom.
Managing Villa at some stage in his career may appeal to Potter, but it’s clear that he is settled at Brighton right now.
