Nuno Tavares has told Sky Sports how he shocked some with his physicality and speed after joining Arsenal from boyhood club Benfica during this year’s summer transfer window.

Mikel Arteta wanted to improve his full-back options in the off-season, after relying heavily on Kieran Tierney last term. The Scotland international also suffered frequent injuries, with the 24-year-old missing two separate month-long periods with knee problems.

But Tierney’s first-choice status in north London left Gunners Technical Director Edu with a problem. He needed to find someone capable of deputising, yet happy with a back-up role.

Arsenal eventually found that man in Tavares, and agreed a £7m plus add-ons transfer with Benfica in July. He has since made 10 appearances across all completions so far for Arteta.

The 21-year-old has also started their last three Premier League games after Tierney picked up a bruised ankle last month. Arteta kept Tavares in the Arsenal backline last time out at home to Watford despite Tierney’s return from injury, too.

Tavares has impressed Arsenal’s fans and manager alike with his performances in wins over Aston Villa, Leicester City and Watford. But admits he took some by surprise after joining.

“When I arrived at Arsenal people were surprised by my physicality and my speed,” he said.

“I think it is good for me to bring energy when I am on the pitch, and I think I am doing well to help the team.”

Should Arteta field Tavares over Tierney when Arsenal visit Liverpool?

Arteta now has a potential selection dilemma on his hands with Tavares ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool on Saturday. Does he bench the performing Portuguese or ignore Tierney?

Tavares has brought plenty of energy to the Gunners’ left-back position in his recent games and is giving Tierney trouble. His drive and pace to bring possession up the field has proven to be very effective for Arteta.

The Benfica product will also not suffer the same problems at Liverpool as he did at periods against Watford. With the Hornets’ deep defensive positioning starving Tavares of space to exploit. As the Reds will be expected to attack Arsenal, given they are playing at home.
