Lazio may offer Kepa Arrizabalaga an escape route from Chelsea in 2022, as he is Maurizio Sarri’s ‘dream’ to replace reported Newcastle United transfer target Thomas Strakosha.
That’s according to Corriere dello Sport, who claim Kepa wants to leave Stamford Bridge as he does not feature enough.
The Spaniard has only played four times across all competitions so far this season, including one Premier League appearance.
Kepa also only featured against Tottenham Hotspur in Chelsea’s 3-0 win as Edouard Mendy felt uncomfortable after sustaining a knock.
Thomas Tuchel has awarded the Blues’ £71m shot-stopper two Carabao Cup starts, too. And also introduced Kepa in the last-minute of the UEFA Super Cup with penalties looming.
But a back-up Premier League role to Mendy in Chelsea’s squad irritates Kepa, who would accept a transfer to Lazio.
Kepa is Sarri’s ‘dream’ transfer target to reinforce the Lazio net, amid doubt in Pepe Reina and Strakosha’s futures.
Both Reina and Strakosha – a reported transfer target for Newcastle – are out of contract at the end of the season. And Lazio will only extend Reina’s deal if they qualify for Europe.
Sarri will meet Biancocelesti President Claudio Lotito soon to discuss the Serie A side’s plans for the January and summer 2022 transfer windows.
A deal for Kepa will prove difficult for Lazio, however, as he earns £155k-a-week at Chelsea. And while a loan move could be possible, the Blues would want most of his salary covered.
Kepa leaving Chelsea for Lazio would be good for Newcastle’s Strakosha pursuit
Kepa possibly leaving Chelsea for Lazio will be good for Newcastle in their transfer pursuit of Strakosha.
Reports by The Sun recently claimed the Magpies scouted Strakosha in the Europa League against Marseille. And want to sign the Albania international as early as next January.
Newcastle hope Strakosha’s contract situation will force Lazio to accept a cut-price fee in the winter transfer market.
The 26-year-old also wants to leave the Stadio Olimpico next year, having only featured four times – each in Europe – so far this season with Reina currently Sarri’s number one.
