Borussia Monchengladbach chief Max Eberl has told Gladbach Live he cannot rule anything out during contract talks with reported Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Matthias Ginter.

The Germany defender only has seven-months remaining on his deal at Borussia-Park and will soon have to plot his future.

Eberl hopes he can negotiate new terms with Ginter to keep the centre-half in North Rhine-Westphalia beyond the current season.

The 27-year-old joined Die Fohlen from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for £14.5m and has played 159 times for the club. Including nine of 11 Bundesliga fixtures so far this term.

Ginter’s uncertain future at Borussia Monchengladbach sparked vast transfer interest in the summer – including from Tottenham. With Bild even reporting Spurs made an offer.

The north Londoners remain keen on a deal to sign the 45-cap enforcer, too. Calciomercato reported Tottenham have already explored their chances of a 2022 transfer for Ginter. But could face rival competition from European giants Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Eberl admits Tottenham target Ginter’s future at Monchengladbach uncertain

Borussia Monchengladbach Sporting Director Eberl hopes he can fend off transfer interest in Ginter from Tottenham et al next year by tying the defender down with a new contract.

But Die Fohlen will also be prepared in case the centre-back and teammate Denis Zakaria decide to pursue futures elsewhere.

“I can’t rule out anything in times of Corona. Our intention, our clear message, is that we would like to extend with these two players,” Eberl said.

“If it does not turn out that way, we will deal with the new starting position. However, it should also be clear that you are not unprepared or even run blindly through life.”

Eberl added that Borussia Monchengladbach are not the only club whose finances have felt the brunt of the pandemic. So, some players now have fewer options for possible transfers.

“Players now have to decide: do I play poker and leave for a free transfer and see what happens? With the dangers that must then be borne,” he said.

“Say injuries, fluctuations in performance or a decline in interest. It is clear that these two players will always get a contract somewhere. But the two of them don’t want a contract somewhere, they want ambitious contracts.

“Not only in monetary terms, but also in terms of sport. That’s what we have been able to offer the players again and again, and what we can offer again today. So, we talk to each other – and that’s why I don’t feel without a chance in the talks.”

Ginter will likely have maintained Tottenham’s interest in a transfer with his performances for Borussia Monchengladbach so far this season.

He has helped to three clean sheets in 11 games across all competitions, including shutting out Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller in a 5-0 DFB-Pokal surprise.
