Antonio Conte wants Tottenham Hotspur to sign a goalkeeper amid doubt in Hugo Lloris’ future, with Ajax stopper Andre Onana the latest name on his transfer shortlist, per 90min.
Lloris is out of contract at the end of the season, having entered the final eight-months of his £100k-a-week deal. He also noted in September he is yet to hold talks over new terms.
The France international penned his current deal back in 2016 to extend his ties with Spurs to a decade. He joined the north Londoners from Lyon four-years earlier in a £13m switch.
Lloris – who turns 35 next month – has not ruled out signing a new contract, but he will not stay at Tottenham just to sit on the bench. The 134-cap shot-stopper has started all 11 of their Premier League fixtures so far this season, keeping four clean sheets.
Conte is keen for Tottenham to sign a new goalkeeper, nonetheless, and has held talks with Managing Director Fabio Paratici. The Italian is yet to give Lloris’ backup, Pierluigi Gollini, an appearance since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm.
Conte eyes Onana transfer to solve Tottenham need
Conte is a long-term fan of Onana, and could now seek a transfer to bring the Ajax stopper to Tottenham. He is excellent with the ball at his feet and starting play out from the back.
Spurs could face some competition should Paratici target the 25-year-old, however. Inter Milan are considering Onana to replace Samir Handanovic when his contract ends in June.
Newcastle United also hold an interest in Onana, who returned from a ninth-month ban for doping earlier this month. UEFA found him guilty of taking a forbidden substance, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced his one-year suspension.
Additionally, Calciomercato report Inter want to wrap up a deal for Onana in January. But Xavi Hernandez could ask Barcelona to challenge the Serie A side Conte left this summer.
Should Spurs sign Onana?
Onana is yet to feature following his ban, but took a seat on the Ajax bench against Go Ahead Eagles. It marked his first appearance in a matchday squad since February, when his season ended after 26 appearances and nine clean sheets across all competitions.
Tottenham could land a bargain by edging rival suitors to a transfer with Ajax for Onana to solve Conte’s need. He would likely prove a cheaper option than Aston Villa goalie Emiliano Martinez, who the Independent cite as a target.
Conte can also show Arsenal what they missed out on this summer after considering a transfer for Onana. Who Fabrizio Romano said on the Here We Go Podcast:
