Liverpool humbled Manchester United to win 5-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, and Lothar Matthaus has shared in his column for Sky Germany why the result made him ‘very happy’.

Naby Keita broke the deadlock at the weekend, before Diogo Jota and a Mohamed Salah hat-trick stretched the margin. But the scoreline could have been even more in the Reds favour entering half-time and then the final whistle.

The result sparked jubilant celebrations in the away end, while anger bubbled among the booing home fans. Liverpool’s thrashing of Manchester United also piled pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who The Telegraph report is starting to lose the dressing room’s support.

Matthaus wonders if Solskjaer can come back from Manchester United’s devastating loss at home to Liverpool at the weekend. The German icon has also shared his delight for Jurgen Klopp after what the Reds and Mohamed Salah produced.

“The game of the games in England ended with a 5-0 for Klopp, which of course makes me very happy for him,” Matthaus wrote. “That was perfect football that Liverpool celebrated. In such a game, of all things, to get such a performance was unbelievable from the Reds and above all from Salah.

“It is easy to imagine that it will be tight for United coach Solskjaer. Because such a defeat in front of your home crowd against your biggest rival, you rarely survive from a sporting point of view.”

Salah produced record-breaking display in Liverpool rout at Manchester United

Salah produced a record-break display against Manchester United for the Liverpool star to earn Matthaus’ praise. Opta shared the Egyptian’s treble at Old Trafford made him the highest-scoring African in Premier League history with 106 goals.

Chelsea great Didier Drogba previously held the honour with 104 in 254 games, precisely 100 more appearances than Salah needed. The Ivorian also provided 64 assists over his English top-flight outings, while the Reds winger has created 41 and counting.

Additionally, Salah boasts the better single-season goals return of the pair after scoring 32 during 2017/18 following his £34m arrival. Drogba registered his best haul in 2009/10 with the striker netting 29 times for only his second 20+ goal campaign.
