According to Calciomercato, Newcastle could now turn their attentions to Gennaro Gattuso, who has been on their radar in the past.

What’s the story?

Well, the Italian news outlet believe Gattuso was considered by Newcastle in the past, and is now a contender to replace Steve Bruce.

Calciomercato are claiming that Jorge Mendes is working to get the 43-year-old’s name included among the top targets to replace Bruce.

Gattuso actually left Napoli at the end of last season, before taking the vacant managerial role at Fiorentina.

In bizarre circumstances, the agreement was mutually terminated on June 17th, just two weeks before his contract was set to begin on July 1st.

Across his managerial career, Gattuso has overseen 287 games, winning 130 – he averages 1.62 points per game.

He’s also won silverware, lifting the Coppa Italia with Napoli.

Should Newcastle hire Gennaro Gattuso?

In our view, Amanda Staveley and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia can do much better than Gattuso.

Yes, his record is quite impressive, although he doesn’t compare to the likes of Antonio Conte, who is also currently available.

Additionally, Gattuso has a bit of a temper on him, something PIF may be wary of.

The Italian once let this temper get the better of him when AC Milan played Tottenham, as he strangled and head-butted Spurs coach Joe Jordan.

It led to Harry Redknapp describing the hot-headed midfielder as ‘crazy’ – in truth, that was probably an understatement at the time.

Keep an eye on this situation, as Newcastle have already done their due diligence on Gattuso previously, it seems – this could have legs.
