Lothar Matthaus has tipped RB Salzburg sensation Karim Adeyemi to assert himself at any club in the world, in his column for Sky Germany, amid transfer interest from Liverpool.

The German icon believes Adeyemi has the potential to be an invaluable player within the next few years. Highlighting the 19-year-old striker’s immense speed as one of his key traits that sides like Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund or RB Leipzig could look to capitalise on.

RB Salzburg currently want around €30m (£25m) to sell Adeyemi after starting the season with 11 goals in 16 games. The Munich-born talent also struck home nine and assisted 11 in 39 outings in all competitions last term, after breaking through to the first-team in 2020.

Liverpool are among the many sides who admire Adeyemi for what the teen is producing at RB Salzburg. Bild report the Reds, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all tracking the young star, who scored on his senior Germany debut during the September international break.

Matthaus backs Liverpool target Adeyemi

Matthaus strongly feels Adeyemi has the talent to choose which club to leave Salzburg for, amid reported interest from Liverpool. But questions if the teen would return to the Allianz Arena a decade on from Bayern releasing the striker, given the competition he would face.

“Leverkusen had a major upheaval before the season, at Bayern there were now selective reinforcements in a functioning team,” he wrote. “Possibly one of the next reinforcements will be Karim Adeyemi. He will be able to choose which club he would like to switch to.

“The price is currently around €30m (£25m). But, of course, he has the potential to be invaluable to most clubs in a few years. A big plus is his speed. He’s got an incredible pace. The question is, where does he want to play and where does the next step go?

“Does he trust Bavaria, even at the risk that there is great competition with [Leroy] Sane, [Serge] Gnabry, [Jamal] Musiala and co. Or does he take the intermediate step in Leipzig or Dortmund, like so many young talents? A little more playing time is guaranteed there than with the record champions. He definitely has what it takes to assert himself at any club.”

Should Liverpool sign the Salzburg sensation?

Liverpool could struggle to tempt Adeyemi into moving to Anfield if he looks to leave RB Salzburg soon. Sport1 report Dortmund are on pole for his services after fruitful talks with the forward’s agent. Adeyemi also views the Westfalenstadion as a suitable destination for his continued development. Rather than returning to Bayern Munich and not playing often.

Jurgen Klopp would likely welcome a young forward with the German’s potential, however. Adeyemi is showing at Salzburg and now also on the international stage his threat in front of the goal. But, in doing so, giving Die Roten Bullen reason to increase his market value.
