Rangers defender Leon Balogun was a surprise starter at right-back for the Scottish champions in this afternoon’s Old Firm clash – and the Nigerian international silenced his critics with a man-of-the-match performance for the Gers.
With James Tavernier and Nathan Patterson both out as a result of Covid issues, Balogun was forced to step in at right-back and was imperious in a position that isn’t his natural one.
Balogun was strong in the tackle and done an excellent job snuffing out Kyogo Furuhashi down the right flank, keeping the Japanese international pretty quiet throughout.
Before the game, fans were worried about the prospect of Balogun at right-back with many still remembering how poor the Super Eagles star was when he had to step in away to Antwerp in the Europa League.
In the end, there was nothing for the Rangers support to worry about as Balogun barely put a foot wrong and was arguably the best player on the pitch in a pulsating Old Firm.
It is no surprise Rangers fans were concerned ahead of the game when news broke that Patterson was having to self-isolate, joining Tavernier on the sidelines and reducing the options available for the Gers.

Rangers – and Balogun in particular – were hard-working, full of energy and willing to be patient and exploit opportunities, and it was no surprise when Balogun was named sponsor’s man of the match inside Ibrox.
While the defender isn’t suddenly going to start challenging Tavernier, or even Patterson, for the right-back slot, it will be reassuring to Gerrard to know he can get the sort of performances from Balogun that he delivered against Celtic.
