Georgios Giakoumakis will ‘undoubtedly’ leave VVV-Venlo before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline, amid interest from Celtic and Werder Bremen, according to de Gelderlander.
Celtic have pursued signing Giakoumakis after the Greece striker scored a stunning 26 goals in 30 Eredivisie appearances last season. Yet his efforts were unable to prevent the German border outfit from dropping out of the Dutch top-flight.
It has been a matter of when, not if, that Giakoumakis leaves VVV-Venlo this summer and for how much. The Pride of the South were loath to take a discount earlier in the window, but must now accept around €3.5m (£3m), despite generous offers from Qatari clubs.
A move to Qatar did not appeal to Giakoumakis, who has long wanted a move to Werder Bremen. However, the Bundesliga2 outfit cannot afford his demand of a €700,000-a-year (£11.5k-p/w) contract after dropping out of the Germany top-flight.
Giakoumakis’ agent continues to negotiate with Werder in attempts to strike a deal for the Celtic target to leave VVV-Venlo. But even if the 26-year-old does not arrive at the Weser Stadium before Tuesday night, he will leave De Koel.
Celtic may be Giakoumakis’ destination, as well, as Deich Stube report they are ready to pay the VVV-Venlo striker £12k-p/w. Inside Futbol also claim the six-cap international is in constant communication with Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou over moving to Glasgow.
Should Celtic sign VVV-Venlo striker Giakoumakis before the deadline?
It is remarkable that VVV-Venlo were relegated from the Eredivisie last term, despite Celtic target Giakoumakis scoring 26 goals. He also netted three in three KNVB Beker cup ties as the Pride of the South reached the 2020/21 semi-finals.
VVV-Venlo would likely have hoped Giakoumakis would stick around to now fire them out of the Eerste Division. But he has not featured in their opening three games, which Jos Luhukay’s side have won, drawn and lost.
Clearly, then, Giakoumakis will likely leave VVV-Venlo in the next week, as de Gelderlander expect, but will he join Celtic? Postecoglou may have bent his arm to overlook Werder and move to Glasgow. Adding a promising weapon to his Hoops attack after a staggered start.
