Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with the representatives of Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar in the hope of setting up a deal before deadline day.
That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim that informal negotiations have been held between Tottenham and Aouar’s representatives.
Aouar wants Champions League football, and may wait until next summer to get the move he wants rather than settle for Tottenham now.
That hasn’t stopped Fabio Paratici from trying though, and Lyon seem open to a deal – it’s now up to Aouar to decide.
Arsenal out of the picture
Last week, The Mirror reported that Tottenham were making their move for Aouar because they knew Arsenal were out of the race.
The Gunners were interested in Aouar too, but ended up signing Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid instead.
With Arsenal out of the picture, Tottenham may now feel that they are favourites to sign Aouar – but they’re running out of time to get him signed.
Manchester City have been keen too, with Pep Guardiola calling Aouar ‘incredible’, but they don’t seem to be in the race right now.
This is what Fabio Paratici does
If you’re confused as to why Tottenham are being linked with yet another midfielder, this is just what Paratici loves to do.
Tottenham have been targeting Nahitan Nandez of late, whilst Corentin Tolisso, Weston McKennie and Ilaix Moriba continue to be linked.
Paratici loves to target four, five, six players in position at a time, and then whittle down later. With a midfielder wanted, Aouar is one target on the pile rather than the only option.
