Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has insisted losing to Dundee United is an opportunity for him to “reset and give some people a few home truths” after they suffered a league defeat for the first time in 521 days this afternoon.

Jamie Robson’s goal was the difference as Rangers put in a woeful display to end their long unbeaten run and raise some serious concerns ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Malmo.

Gerrard only has a few days to pick his players up and insists he’s going to need a much better performance against the Swedes if Rangers are to make it to the playoff round of the Champions League.

“When you face a setback it’s a chance to reset and give some people a few home truths and analyse,” Gerrard told Sky Sports Football after his side’s 1-0 defeat.

“That’s what you do as a manager but at the moment we’ve no time to feel sorry for ourselves or be too down, we’ve got to try pick this team up. We’ve got a massive game in three days time but we’re going to need a higher performance to get that done.”

The Gers are trailing 2-1 on aggregate and will have to make a few changes to the side again come Tuesday night.

With no early qualifiers to help the Gers get up to speed this season, it has shown in their performances and Gerrard needs to fix it quickly.

Any advantage Rangers gained when Celtic drew last weekend could already be thrown away and the hard work starts now for the Rangers players.
