Tottenham Hotspur have high hopes for midfielder Alfie Devine – and Jose Mourinho allegedly thinks he is similar to Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Mourinho actually told Devine that he reminded him of Fernandes already, even at the age of just 17.
Mourinho would let Devine train with the first team at times, but wanted to try and keep him out of the limelight – even if he thought Devine would become a star.
The report adds that some are likening Devine to Chelsea ace Billy Gilmour or even former Everton star Tim Cahill. Steven Gerrard has even been named as a possible comparison too.
The comparison to Fernandes will excite Tottenham fans though.
Fernandes hit a ridiculous 28 goals and 17 assists for Manchester United last season, cementing his status as one of the Premier League’s top players.
Tottenham actually targeted Fernandes back in 2019, but ended up missing out as the Portuguese international moved to Old Trafford instead.
Mourinho would later claim that he wouldn’t swap Giovani Lo Celso for Fernandes, and it seems that he felt Devine could end up being Tottenham’s very own Fernandes.
Devine has now signed a professional deal with Tottenham, and the hope will be that he lives up to Mourinho’s comparison after arriving for a fraction of the Fernandes fee.
