Sheffield United defender George Baldock is aware of Celtic’s interest but won’t force a move to the Scottish Premiership giants this summer, as reported by The Star.

It’s fair to say the Ange Postecoglou era hasn’t gone to plan so far.

Just three games into the Australian’s tenure, Celtic are out of the Champions League and already playing catch up in the Premiership.

One of the few positives so far has been the performance of 22-year-old Anthony Ralston – scorer of that stunning solo goal in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Hearts.

But his presence in the starting XI reflects more on the club’s sluggishness in the transfer market than it does Ralston’s own sense of self-improvement.

Celtic eye Baldock to strengthen right-back slot

It’s no secret Postecoglou is desperate to bring a right-back to Parkhead before the end of August.

Baldock quickly emerged as his number one choice, the Buckingham-born 28-year-old offering experience, tenacity, superb crossing ability and a proven track record at a high level.

According to The Star, however, Celtic value Baldock at £5 million – far less than Sheffield United want – while that two-legged defeat to Midtjylland did the Hoops no favours, limiting their budget and their ability to lure targets from more competitive, high-profile leagues.

Furthermore, while Baldock is aware of Celtic’s interest, he isn’t going to force his way out of a Sheffield United side that will go into the season as one of the favourites for automatic promotion under Championship specialist Slavisa Jokanovic.

Celtic have already missed out on Sacha Boey and Milan van Ewijk, while calling off negotiations to sign Valentin Rosier from Sporting Lisbon.

There are fears a deal for Aurelio Buta could be hijacked by Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce too, with Ralston likely to retain his place for another couple of weeks at least (Record).
