Fabrizio Romano has revealed on his podcast that Willian is still determined to leave Arsenal this summer, only 11 months after joining the club.
Despite being a free transfer, Arsenal committed to a major financial package when they agreed to sign the Brazilian winger after his Chelsea contract.
According to The Sun, the Gunners gave him a £220,000-a-week contract but the player hasn’t lived up to his big salary.
Willian scored just the one goal in 36 games across all competitions under Mikel Arteta last season.
To make matters worse, he has incurred the wrath of the North London club’s fanbase.
MLS side Inter Miami were reportedly keen on the player but The Sun reported earlier in July that his wage demands led to a collapse in negotiations.
But according to Romano, the player is still actively trying to leave Arsenal.
He told his Here We Go podcast: “We have many questions from Arsenal fans but talking about Willian, the situation is basically the same. The player wants to leave. Willian wants to leave Arsenal and Arsenal are open to selling him this summer.”
There’s no glory in celebrating the news that a player wants to leave his club.
But make no mistake, Arsenal fans will be over the moon if it’s true that Willian is still keen to leave.
The Emirates Stadium club have just got rid of Mesut Ozil, who was a major burden on the wage bill.
And although Willian isn’t earning £350,000 per week, he’s still earning a bomb and will be until the year 2023.
It was a dreadfully shortsighted move by Edu to give a 32-year-old such a huge first contract but if he and Arteta can get him off the books, it’ll soften the blow.
