What’s the story?

You might be wondering why this concerns the Reds.

Liverpool are said to be in talks with Diego Simeone’s side over the signing of Saul Niguez, who came through Atlético Madrid’s academy.

The Spanish champions want £43m for their midfield maestro.

Both the Spaniard and De Paul operate in similar areas, so fans have been sparked into a discussion after seeing the South American leave Udinese.

It makes sense.

There’s every chance Simeone has just been waiting for a replacement to arrive, before moving forwards in negotiations with Jürgen Klopp’s side.

Would Saul be a good signing?

In our view, Liverpool shouldn’t have let De Paul join Atlético Madrid without a serious challenge.

The Reds were linked with a move for the Copa America winner, but no serious swoop materialised.

Yes, Saul is a superb player, and would be a fine signing.

However, he’s a bit more defensive than De Paul. Liverpool already have enough defensive steel in Fabinho, James Milner and Jordan Henderson.

In that respect, a more attack-minded midfielder would’ve been better suited coming to Anfield this summer.

Having said that, Saul is a man of many talents. With Klopp’s coaching ability, Liverpool can turn the Spaniard into anything they want.

For now, let’s see what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying about Saul after De Paul joined Atlético Madrid…
