Airdrie boss Ian Murray is weighing up a move for recently released Rangers defender Harris O’Connor after being impressed with the teenager during a trial stint with the Diamonds.

O’Connor recently left the Light Blues as a number of young talents were let go from the Gers Academy and former Ibrox star Murray has handed him a chance to win a contract with the Diamonds.

O’Connor played the full 90 minutes as League One side lost out to local rivals Clyde in the final of the North Lanarkshire Cup, playing on the right of a back three for Airdrie.

Murray admits he as a “lot of cover” in that position and hailed the 19-year-old’s fantastic attitude but confessed he needs to be “fair” to him in terms of how much action he might see this season.

“Harris is a really talented player but he is still young,” Murray said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

We just need to weigh up the options with him and be fair to him in terms of how many minutes he could get at Airdrie next season.

“We’ve got a lot of cover on the right side of our defence with Sam Wardrop and Craig Watson.

“He’s been with us for four or five sessions and he’s got a fantastic attitude.

“It was a hard game for him today but these are the type of games that you learn against defensive trialists.

“It was a good test for him and we will sit down with him over the next couple of days.”

Rangers exit a surprise after young defender impressed for Light Blues

O’Connor’s Rangers release came as something of a surprise ahead of the Gers entering a B team into the Lowland League this season.

The former Charlton and Kilmarnock kid has impressed for the Rangers Academy sides and will be hoping to prove his quality after leaving Ibrox.

A move to Airdrie could be an excellent chance for him to kickstart his career with the Diamonds and look to help them return to the Championship this season.
