Rangers under-18s head coach David McCallum is expected to step up and take charge of the Gers’ B team alongside Brian Gilmour as they embark on a historic Lowland League campaign.
After Kevin Thomson’s departure to replace Barry Ferguson at League Two new boys, it left a gaping hole in the coaching team of the B team beside Gilmour.
With the B team comprised of players who, largely, played under McCallum in last season’s CAS title success, McCallum leading the B team with Gilmour is the sensible step.
Having worked alongside Graeme Murty and the under-20s previously, taking charge when Murty stepped up to the first-team, McCallum has plenty of experience with the second string at Ibrox.
McCallum joined Rangers in 2015 as technical coordinator and assistant Development Team coach and has worked with various groups at Ibrox in his six years with the club.
B team have a fantastic opportunity to continue their development
With the B team kicking the season off in 16 days against Bo’ness United, there is a huge chance for the youngsters to get a massive amount of game-time under their belts.
The Lowland League will be a fantastic chance to play against senior professionals in games with real consequences, as well as getting the opportunity for some to also compete in the UEFA Youth League.
This season’s Scottish Challenge Cup will also offer competitive games against senior pros, with the Rangers youngsters sure to want to go further than they did last time out, losing to Inverness CT in the semi-finals.
