Reported Crystal Palace and Norwich City target Sebastiaan Bornauw has asked to leave FC Cologne but has his heart set on a move to Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg, the club’s interim sporting director has told Kicker.
While the Premier League remains a dream destination for thousands of footballers across the planet, it seems Bornauw has his sights fixed elsewhere.
After narrowly avoiding the drop last term – it was Bornauw’s dramatic, final-day goal against Schalke that saved Cologne from relegation. Now, the Belgium international wants to prove his worth on the biggest stage of all, the Champions League.
And it’s an opportunity that will come his way should Bornauw join Wolfsburg before the August transfer deadline.
Die Wolfe finished third in the Bundesliga last season.
Will Crystal Palace and Norwich miss out on Bornauw?
So while Crystal Palace and Norwich shouldn’t accept defeat just yet – Wolfsburg have failed to meet Cologne’s £18 million asking price so far – it seems they are up against it in their pursuit of a talented 22-year-old centre-back.
“We had a conversation. His advisors have registered his wish that he would like to move to Wolfsburg,” explains interim sporting director Jorg Jakobs.
The former Anderlecht youngster is expected to reject a new contract too as he looks to force Cologne’s hand.
Norwich signed another Bundesliga prospect in Werder Bremen winger Milot Rashica earlier this week and will now turn their attention to defensive reinforcements with Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer top of their list.
West Ham, meanwhile, will have just three senior centre-backs at their disposal when Fabian Balbuena’s contract expires at the end of this month.
