According to the Chronicle’s Mark Douglas, Florian Lejeune could be leaving Newcastle this summer.

What’s the story?

Well, when speaking on the Everything is Black and White Podcast, Douglas said: “Florian Lejeune is someone I think they will look to move on.

“I think he’s made his decision on Lejeune, and he’ll be made available again this summer. He is one they would probably accept offers for if they came in.”

That is a real shame, especially seeing as the Frenchman spent the entirety of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Alaves.

If he is to be sold, it’s disappointing to hear Lejeune won’t even be given a chance to prove himself, and show off anything he’s learnt while on loan.

There was uproar when the £38,000-a-week defender was impressing over in Spain, with some fans thinking he deserved to stay and play.

However, Steve Bruce calls the shots, and he clearly doesn’t think much of the 30-year-old if Douglas is accurate with his comments.

Lejeune deserves one more season

At 30, Lejeune isn’t exactly going to be bringing in big money for Newcastle should they find a buyer for him.

Additionally, Bruce was forced to use Isaac Hayden at centre-back eight times during the 2020/21 season, according to Transfermarkt.

In that respect, he clearly doesn’t have a lot of options, so Lejeune – who Bruce once called terrific – is surely worth keeping on Tyneside.

As long as he wants to stay, of course.

If we were in Bruce’s shoes, we wouldn’t sell the centre-back.

Who knows, he might be a changed man after his loan spell at Alaves.
