Tottenham Hotspur are no longer favourites to sign Jannik Vestergaard with The Athletic reporting the Southampton ace is more likely to head abroad than join a Premier League rival.
Did Spurs’ interest in the Great Dane follow a certain Jose Mourinho out the door?
In March, The Mirror reported the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss was the driving force behind a potential deal for one of the tallest players in England’s top flight.
And it’s telling that, since Mourinho was handed his P45 more than a month ago, the Vestergaard trail has gone cold.
The Athletic believes this is no coincidence, with Tottenham seemingly casting their eye over alternative centre-back options heading into the summer transfer window.
That means, if 6ft 6in, £18 million Vestergaard does go with just one year left on his Southampton contract, he’s more likely to join a club in Spain, Italy or Germany than an English one.

Interestingly, Mourinho’s new club – Serie A giants Roma – have identified the former Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach powerhouse as one of their top targets as the Giallorossi look to strengthen a defence that conceded 58 goals in 38 league matches in 2020/21 (TMW).
Football London recently reported Tottenham are looking to bring in two centre-backs this summer, with veteran free agent Jerome Boateng, Vitoria Guimaraes’ Abdul Mumin and Manchester City benchwarmer Nathan Ake all linked.
Fulham’s Joachim Andersen is also a reported target.
Strong in the air, a natural-born leader and a superb passer of the ball, Lyon-owned Andersen looks a ready-made successor to the ageing Toby Alderweireld.
