With the Daily Mail last night reporting Nathan Ake could be on his way to Tottenham Hotspur, it’s tempting to wonder if there’s something else at play here.

Is the Manchester City stopper merely a solution to solve Spurs’ long-standing defensive problems, a £41 million makeweight in a deal that would see Harry Kane go in the other direction?

The report claims Ake has plenty of admirers in north London.

Or can more be read into claims suggesting the former Chelsea youngster could be on his way back to the English capital?

Is it merely a coincidence one of the managers in contention to take Jose Mourinho’s place praised Ake to the hilt during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge, lauding the Dutchman’s character as well as his quality?

For now, all we have is questions. Answers will hopefully follow soon enough.

Will Conte and Ake reunite at Tottenham?

“I am very pleased with Ake’s impact. He came on and looked like a veteran,” Antonio Conte said in 2017 after a fresh-faced defender helped Chelsea beat Everton 3-0 in the Premier League.

“He is showing great commitment, work rate and concentration when I ask him to play.

“He understands I trust him.”

Conte had recalled Ake from an impressive loan spell at Bournemouth midway through the 2016/17 campaign.

Chelsea cash in on Ake

And when Chelsea eventually cashed in on their academy graduate a few months later, selling him to the Cherries in a deal worth £20 million, the always outspoken Conte didn’t miss an opportunity to suggest Ake was sold against his wishes (Standard).

Should the former Blues boss take the Tottenham job after walking away from cash-strapped Inter Milan – with La Stampa reporting he has been offered a staggering £17 million-a-year contract – Conte may be welcomed back to London by a defender he knows and, more importantly, “trusts”.
