Christian Kouame is aware of speculation linking him with Wolverhampton Wanderers but, speaking to the BBC, the Serie A striker insists he would prefer to stay at Fiorentina.

While his Stadio Artemio Franchi teammate has rarely been out of the gossip columns, it was a surprise to learn Kouame is also a target for Premier League clubs heading into the summer transfer window.

The Ivory Coast international has been overshadowed quite spectacularly by Dusan Vlahovic this season.

In total, Kouame started just nine times this term, scoring once.

The most difficult campaign of Kouame’s professional career hasn’t put off the likes of Wolves, however, with the 24-year-old fully aware of reports linking him with a summer move to Molineux.

“I have heard of it, but my agent didn’t say anything to me really,” said Kouame, who has found the net just three times since joining Fiorentina from Genoa in a £14 million deal.

“I have just put a strange year behind me. I know I could have done more and I am very happy in Florence.

“Everyone welcomed me with open arms. The city is beautiful and my wife and son are here with me. The club will have to tell me they don’t need me any more, otherwise I am happy to stay.

“One day in the future I would like to play in another country, though.

“I feel I owe myself and the club something. Things didn’t go as planned for us this season and the atmosphere got quite tense. I feel much better now. I have put the injury fully behind me and I am confident things will improve.”

Tuttomercatoweb reported today that Wolves’ interest in the versatile frontman has grown in the past two months.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, are back in the race for a player who was on his way to Selhurst Park for £10 million before suffering an ill-timed cruciate ligament injury in January 2020.
