Simon Jordan can’t understand why Brendan Rodgers would be tempted by the Tottenham Hotspur job, telling talkSPORT leaving Leicester City would be a “sideways move”.

Since the turn of the year, Spurs have slipped from the title race to the depths of sixth place, their Champions League hopes going up in smoke. Their talisman and captain wants to leave, while across the board there are players out of form or seemingly past their sell by date.

Compare that with Leicester City – a youthful, forward-thinking, brilliantly run side still basking in the glory of winning their first FA Cup.

In Youri Tielemans, James Maddison, Kelechi Iheanacho, James Justin and Wesley Fofana, the Foxes have some supremely talented up-and-comers with genuine world-class potential.

What’s more, with a seat at Europe’s top table within their grasp, there’s no need for Leicester to cash in on their star players soon.

So why would Rodgers leave Leicester for Tottenham? According to former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan, he wouldn’t.

“Tottenham is not an upward move for him. It’s a sideways move to some extent,” Jordan says.

“If you embrace all the ingredients Tottenham Hotspur should be, it would be an upwards move – but that’s should be, would be and could be.

“The reality of it is Leicester is a far better football club in many ways. I said this earlier on in the season, Leicester are a brilliant football club and are a better team than Man United. Everyone went up in arms at the fact I made that observation and they proceeded to beat United in the cup semi-final.

“Brendan has got the football nous to know when to stick and when to twist and Tottenham isn’t a big enough job.

“You haven’t got this love-in of an owner (at Spurs) who will defer to you and give you what you want. You’ve got Daniel (Levy) who operates how he does, which is at times economically right for Tottenham – but right now it isn’t right for Tottenham achievement wise.

“Leicester have done something Tottenham haven’t done for 13 years, that’s win a cup.”

In truth, Rodgers has never betrayed any interest in the vacant Spurs post, confirming his commitment to Leicester whenever the topic has arisen. And that’s the problem Tottenham face right now.

From Erik ten Hag to Marcelino Garcia Toral and Vitor Pereira to Julian Nagelsmann, no-one seems to have any desire to take over from Jose Mourinho in the English capital.
