Kris Boyd has hit out at referee John Beaton over his decision to send off Steven Gerrard.

Beaton had a controversial few minutes at the Tony Macaroni Arena on Wednesday night.

He booked Alfredo Morelos for simulation after the Rangers striker went down in the box, but replays showed he had been brought down by Livingston keeper Max Stryjek.

Gerrard was fuming with the decision, and made his feelings known to Beaton as the players left the pitch at half-time.

The Rangers boss was booked for his show of dissent, and after continuing to voice his displeasure he was shown a second yellow and forced to watch the second half in the stand.

That decision could now result in Gerrard being banned from the dugout for the upcoming derby at Celtic Park, a game that may see Rangers being crowned champions depending on results this weekend.

Former Ibrox man Kris Boyd was unimpressed with Beaton, and said on Sky Sports: “Rangers are so close to winning the league title. Emotions are running high and (Gerrard) has had a go, but I think John has to realise ‘I might have made a mistake here’.

“As soon as John Beaton has gone up the tunnel thinking ‘Have I got it wrong, have I got it right?’, when he’s told he’s got it wrong there are a lot of thoughts going through his head and he has sent Steven Gerrard off for something he’s going to be right about.

“It’s a rush of blood and looking back he’ll think ‘I’ve got this totally wrong’.”

Having extended their lead to 18 points thanks to Morelos‘ late winner, Rangers need just four points from their remaining seven games to win their first top-tier title since 2011.
