Real Madrid are watching Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro ‘Pote’ Goncalves very closely as the Wolverhampton Wanderers reject continues to go from strength to strength in Portugal, as reported by Defensa Central.

There are a number of reasons why 2020/21 has been a struggle for the men from Molineux.

The departures of Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota have hit Nuno Epsirito Santo’s team hard, coupled with the injury-enforced absences of Raul Jimenez and Jonny Otto.

And then there’s the dramatic dip in form endured by some of Wolves’ other big-name stars, including Ruben Neves, Willy Boly, Rui Patricio and even the usually reliable Conor Coady.

Just to rub salt into the wounds, two players who seemingly failed to make the grade in the Black Country are now making a real name for themselves elsewhere.

Rafa Mir scored the most brilliant of hat-tricks in La Liga at the weekend while Wolves were once again drawing a blank during their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Goncalves, meanwhile, is attracting glances from the biggest clubs on Earth after firing Sporting Lisbon to the top of the Primeira Liga table with 12 goals in 14 games from central midfield.

On Friday, Record claimed Liverpool are interested in ‘Pote’, who has earned comparisons with former Sporting talisman Bruno Fernandes in recent months.

DC, meanwhile, believes 13-time European champions Real Madrid see Goncalves as the ideal addition to a midfield that’s become less zip and more zimmer frame.

‘Pote’ has a £53 million release clause in his contract. Could he move for a staggering sum only two years after the Premier League strugglers let him go for free?

In fairness to Wolves fans, they always felt he was a player with real potential. If only the club shared their viewpoint.
