Are Wolverhampton Wanderers about to shoot themselves rather dramatically in the foot?

Whether you see it as a blessing or a curse, Wolves will be playing Europa League football next season. And teams with far bigger squads than the one available to Nuno Espirito Santo have struggled to balance domestic and continental commitments in recent years.

A spell in Europe pushed Burnley into a relegation battle last season, it ruined the progress Roberto Martinez made at Everton and contributed massively as Hull dropped out of the top flight in 2015.

So you’d think Wolves would be looking to add to a tight-knit squad by signing new players or promoting promising youngsters, right? Instead, the Black Country giants have allowed a number of academy starlets, including the highly-rated Pedro Goncalves, to walk away.

A 21-year-old play-maker who once captained Valencia at youth level, Goncalves had been tipped for a very bright future at Wolves and shone during the pre-season tour of 2018.

A first-team debut appeared to be only a matter of time. But, in one of the most surprising moves to the summer, Wolves have instead allowed Goncalves to join Portuguese newcomers Famalicao instead, as reported by the Express and Star.

And this hasn’t gone down too well.
