Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has said that Georginio Wijnaldum’s ongoing contract dispute at Liverpool has left him completely baffled.

The former England captain has said that he can’t understand why the Reds haven’t already tied him down to a new deal, with his contract coming to an end in the summer of 2021.

The Netherlands international is yet to agree new terms at Anfield, and Ferdinand clearly believes that this is an issue they need to get sorted sooner rather than later.

“Wijnaldum who I spoke about last week, I think he’s an integral player now with the injuries they’ve got,” Ferdinand said.

“I can’t understand how they’ve not got him tied down to a new deal, because I think he plays any of the three midfield positions, he can play the holding midfielder, he can play the eight as a box to box midfielder or he can play as a ten, which he does great for Holland. So he’s a huge player.”

Ferdinand isn’t wrong about Wijnaldum.

The Dutchman has arguably been the Reds’ most important player this season, as he’s played the second-most minutes of any Liverpool player this term, and he’s been the lynchpin in an ever-changing midfield for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

So, why haven’t the Reds tied him down?

Reports have stated that Liverpool are relaxed about the situation, but with January just around the corner, perhaps they should be on alert as once he enters the final six months of his deal, he’s free to negotiate with any foreign clubs.

With Barcelona and Inter reportedly very interested in his services, he could end up brokering a summer move in the coming weeks.

Hopefully, this is a problem Liverpool can quickly solve.
