Liverpool have had an exceptional start to the season once again, but one issue that is continuously bubbling under the surface is the potential exit of Georginio Wijnaldum.
The midfielder’s contract is up in the summer and with links to Barcelona and Inter running rampant, an Anfield exit doesn’t seem too far away.
Unfortunately, everyone has been very coy about any new contract discussions with Wijndaldum refusing to comment on the matter during the recent international break, while Liverpool have also remained tight-lipped on the situation.
Fortunately, we’ve received an update from James Pearce in The Athletic, who has been told by senior Liverpool sources that the club aren’t too worried about the situation at the moment.
Pearce’s sources have described the situation as ‘fluid’ and ‘relaxed’, which indicates that they’re not overly worried whatever Wijndaldum’s decision may be.
Unfortunately for the Reds, Pearce believes that the most likely outcome is Wijnaldum’s departure, but of course, it remains to be seen whether or not that prediction is on the money.
The senior sources at Anfield were never going to say that they were panicked about the situation, but then again, they have no obligation to come out and say that they’re relaxed either.
It’s always hard to decode what is going on behind the scenes, especially when every party is holding their cards close to their chest.
Hopefully, this all points towards Wijnaldum getting a new deal and continuing to ply his trade under Jurgen Klopp.
He’s once again been one of the Reds’ most important players this season, with only Andy Robertson playing more league minutes than him this term.
