Sergio Romero’s wife has strongly criticised Manchester United on Instagram, amid speculation that Everton wanted to sign him.

Eliana Guercio has criticised United for not letting the Argentina international goalkeeper leave on summer transfer deadline day.

According to The Times, Everton wanted to sign Romero from Premier League rivals United on Monday.

The Toffees reportedly wanted the 33-year-old on loan, but the Red Devils were only looking to sell him on a permanent basis.

BBC Sport (Transfer live blog, 1:34pm, October 5, 2020) reported that the goalkeeper wanted to move to Carlo Ancelotti’s side, as covered by HITC Sport here.

What now for Sergio Romero?

Romero has been on the books of United since 2015, and while he has done well when he has been called into action, the Argentine has been the second choice between the posts behind David de Gea.

With Dean Henderson now at Old Trafford following his time on loan at Sheffield United, the 33-year-old is essentially the third-choice goalkeeper at the Red Devils.

It is hard to see Romero get much playing time this season, as United aim to challenge for the Premier League top four and make an impact in the Champions League.
