Aston Villa have made a breakthrough at the fourth attempt, as they seem to have sealed a transfer for Matty Cash, the Telegraph say.

Villa are expected to announce the signing of Cash soon, after beating off competition for his signature.

Villa have not had it easy, but a bid of £16 million was finally enough to convince Nottingham Forest to sell.

Dean Smith had made three previous offers for Cash, which were all turned down, but Villa seem to have finally got their man.

Cash will offer Villa more attacking thrust from right-back, and should push Frederic Guilbert hard for his starting spot.

If there is one concern about Cash at the top level, it will be over the defensive side of his game, but Smith obviously has seen enough in the 22-year-old to convince him he is ready for the step up to the top level.

Sky Sports Football League pundit Matt Murray described Cash as a ‘quality’ player on Soccer Saturday (January 25th) earlier this season, with his performances at Championship level making him one of the standout players in the division.

Villa had the second most porous defence in the whole of the Premier League last term, so it is no surprise to see the claret and blues looking to strengthen at the back now.
