The Ibrox striker didn’t hold back with his thoughts on potentially leaving Rangers recently.

Pundit Kris Commons has criticised Rangers favourite Alfredo Morelos for his comments last week about a potential move away from Ibrox, writing in his Scottish Daily Mail column (04/11 print edition, The Verdict supplement page 16).

Morelos has been in outstanding form for Steven Gerrard’s side this season, leading to speculation that the Gers might not be able to hang on to his services for long.

Those rumours ramped up last week when the Colombian striker gave an interview to a radio station in his homeland suggesting he was seeking a January transfer window move to a bigger, better league than the Scottish Premiership (The Scottish Sun).

Commons thinks he’s out of order and has let supporters down, feeling he has not conducted himself well, especially after he was backed by fans in the wake of disciplinary issues last season.

As quoted by The Scottish Daily Mail (04/11 print edition, The Verdict supplement page 16), he said: “There’s nothing wrong with a player having ambitions to go on and play at a higher level. That’s part and parcel of the game. But there’s a certain way to go about it and a certain way to carry yourself.”

The Sky Sports man then went on to suggest that the Rangers boss will be angry with the player, stating: “Gerrard must have been fuming when he got wind of those comments last week. Towards the end of the summer transfer window, he was fed up answering questions about the striker.

“Hardly a press conference went past when he wasn’t getting snappy with journalists. The last thing he needs is for Morelos to start mouthing off and creating a story.”

 Has Morelos let Rangers down?

Morelos and the Ibrox side appear to have a tacit understanding that one day the player will move on for big money. It’s been spoken about and discussed by decision makers at the club for long enough to have an air of inevitability about it.

When that day comes remains to be seen. Gerrard is adamant it isn’t any time soon.

Rangers’ stance is pretty clear but it wasn’t much of a surprise then to see the red hot striker discuss a potential move away.

However, Commons is right in the sense that it’s unwise for a player to be so public with that desire, especially in relation to an upcoming transfer window.

Rangers fans will likely always love the player, especially considering his immense goal contribution over the last few seasons, but it can’t be pleasing to see him talk so openly about an exit.

Gerrard must urge the player to remain focused on his immediate task at Rangers – delivering silverware. Morelos will have a chance to prove he can do that against Celtic on December 8th.
