Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has emphatically ruled out Alfredo Morelos leaving Ibrox in the January transfer window, speaking to broadcaster BT Sport on Sunday.

The Colombian forward has been on fire this season but rumours persist about a potential exit when interested clubs come calling in the upcoming window.

Those rumours went into overdrive last week when the 23-year-old spoke to a radio station in his homeland and suggested that he was looking for an imminent move to a bigger and more competitive league (The Scottish Sun).

Gerrard though has moved to quickly reassure supporters there’s nothing to worry about.

Asked if he was confident if the player would still be in Glasgow come January, the Ibrox manager replied simply to BT Sport: “I’m not confident. I’m sure. I’m 100 per cent sure he’s not going anywhere.”

Fans can now feel confident

Rangers’ exceptional form in the early goings this season has naturally led to some excitement amongst supporters that the club can win silverware this season and mount a genuine title challenge well into 2020.

However, there’s definitely been a lingering narrative that they could lose star players in January, with Morelos the primary asset.

As a result, there’s been little reason for supporters to get ahead of themselves. It’s made sense to see how things play out. Losing the Colombian would obviously be a bitter blow to their trophy chase.

However, Gerrard’s promise suggests that Rangers are set to be competitive well into 2020, if Morelos keeps up his dynamite form.

Having scored a sensational 20 goals already this season, his striking output should ensure that the Gers keep pace with Celtic and consistently pick up wins in the Scottish Premiership.

There’s obviously lots of hard work for Rangers ahead, but supporters can now dream of what’s to come for the rest of the season, assured by Gerrard’s emphatic statement that the high-performing core of their side is not about to be broken up at a crucial stage of the season.
