The former Rangers striker was responding to reports of interest from the Ibrox manager, Steven Gerrard.
Si Ferry has claimed that Rangers will try to sign Scott McKenna in the summer transfer window, but according to one former Ibrox striker McKenna should also feature on Sunderland’s radar.
The Aberdeen defender was described by the Rangers manager Steven Gerrard as “tremendous” ahead of the two clubs’ Scottish Cup quarter-final clash on Sunday (Rangers’ official Youtube channel).
And speaking via the Open Goal podcast which he presents (Tuesday, 5 March), Ferry suggested that McKenna, as well as his Aberdeen teammate, Graeme Shinnie, is a target for the Gers.
“We were talking about it on the bus,” he said. “I think Rangers will try to sign (Scott) McKenna in the summer.
“And Shinnie, I think. I think they will try and get both of them.”
McKenna is said to have attracted interest from English clubs of late, with £6 million price tag has been mooted.
And Kevin Kyle, who played for both Rangers and Sunderland, replied on Ferry’s show: “£6 million for him?
“He’s a good big player and for me when it comes to Scottish football he’s exactly what you need at centre-half.
“I went to watch Sunderland on Saturday and they could do worse than sign someone like McKenna.
“He is obviously better than that standard. He’s a big centre-half, hard, physical and he can keep up with them.”
Sunderland, whose manager Jack Ross should be familiar with McKenna from his time in Scottish football, are currently third in League One, and promotion is likely to be required if the Mackems are to stand a chance of signing 22-year-old Scotland international.
