Cardiff City are said to have bid for the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, who is now being linked with a cut-price January move.

Sheffield Wednesday received an offer of around £3 million for Keiren Westwood from Cardiff City in the summer transfer window, according to ‘outside sources’ of the Star and Telegraph reporter, Alan Biggs.

But Wednesday, Biggs claims to have been told, asked for £6 million for the goalkeeper who is now being linked with a free transfer move to Leeds United (according to the Daily Mirror) and looks destined to leave the Owls for nothing in 2019.

The 34-year-old, whose reportedly handsome contract expires in June, made his first appearance of the season at any level on Monday – playing 45 minutes for Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23s in a 2-2 draw at Crewe Alexandra.

But he is not the only fringe player in whom the Owls had interest in the previous transfer window, according to Biggs’ informants.

It is also suggested that the midfielder, David Jones, was wanted on loan by Bolton Wanderers, although a deal failed to materialise for reasons unknown. Jones, also 34, is himself out of contract at the end of this season.

Biggs goes on to suggest there will be no queue for either player when the transfer window opens next month.

Cardiff ultimately signed a different goalkeeper, Alex Smithies from Queens Park Rangers, while Bolton brought in three new players in Jones’ position, Jason Lowe from Blackburn Rovers, Luke Murphy from Leeds and Gary O’Neil from Bristol City – before adding Stephen Ireland from Stoke City at the start of October.

Will Wednesday rue not selling the Leeds-linked star to Cardiff?
