The Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, Keiren Westwood, is set to join Leeds United on a free transfer, according to the Daily Mirror (December 11, page 53).

Westwood has found himself frozen out since the arrival of Jos Luhukay as manager at Hillsborough, but made his first appearance of the season at any level on Monday, playing 45 minutes for the Owls’ Under-23s in a 2-2 draw at Crewe Alexandra.

Leeds, meanwhile, have been left short in the 34-year-old’s position, after Jamal Blackman’s loan spell was prematurely ended by a broken leg.

And Westwood’s experience could make him the ideal candidate to challenge Bailey Peacock-Farrell as Marcelo Bielsa’s first choice in goal.

The Republic of Ireland international is in the final year of his contract at Sheffield Wednesday, whose over-spending has left them with an urgent need to trim the wage bill.

And it makes sense that the Owls would allow Westwood – who is thought to be among the highest earners at Hillsborough – to leave on the cheap in January.

The Mancunian was named player of the year in half of his four full seasons on Wednesday’s books – he also made the Championship team of the season for 2014-15 – and remains popular with the fans there.

Some Leeds supporters have already called for Westwood’s signing, after Blackman got injured.
