Liverpool were expected to be challenging for the Premier League title this season.

Leon Osman was a guest on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily Programme on Monday December 4th, and discussed the Reds’ hopes of challenging for the Premier League title, whilst highlighting their weak defence as their achilles heel.

Liverpool currently it in fourth spot in the Premier League table, a distant 14 points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, although there are still 23 games to be played this season, and anything can happen in football, especially with the hectic Christmas period on the horizon.

Jürgen Klopp’s men have been breathtaking going forward this term, but their fragile defence has proven to be detrimental to their hopes of remaining within touching distance of Pep Guardiola’s side.

And Osman explained why he believes that Liverpool will settle for finishing inside the Champions League places, when speaking live on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily programme:

Jurgen Klopp, Manager of Liverpool looks on during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on October 22, 2017 in London, England.

“Long-term, if you’re going to be competing for medals, and at the top of the Premier League to win the title, they will have to secure a proper defence. I think everyone knows that. I think Jürgen Klopp is aware of that himself, so they do need to strengthen their defence. I think they would be delighted with another top four finish, and maybe competing in a cup competition.”

Liverpool play host to bitter rivals Everton on Sunday, and with the two Manchester clubs facing off on the same day at Old Trafford, Klopp’s men have a fantastic opportunity to gain ground on those above them in the table.

A tilt at the title might still be out of their reach, however, regardless of the result in the Manchester derby.
