Leeds United made a very slow start to life under Garry Monk and had, at one point, been one game away from falling to the bottom of the Championship.

Former Leeds midfielder Stephen McPhail has told Radio Yorkshire that Garry Monk admitted to him that he had to adapt his methods following a difficult start to life at Elland Road.

Monk was deemed to be an excellent appointment for the Whites when he arrived to replace Steve Evans in the summer. But he most definitely did not hit the ground running and they were, at one stage, one defeat away from falling to the bottom of the Championship.

And McPhail suggested that during a recent visit to his old club, Monk suggested that he was the one who had got things wrong during his first few weeks with the Yorkshire side.

“About three weeks ago, I got to spend about an hour with him over in Leeds in his office and he just said that at the start he was probably looking too much into giving so much information to the players and now he’s simplified it for them, they’ve taken to him and taken to the information he’s giving them,” he told Radio Yorkshire.

Monk certainly appears to have learnt from his mistakes if the table is anything to go by. Despite looking like relegation candidates early on, Leeds now sit inside the top six and arguably still have a slim chance of even breaking into the top two if they put together a brilliant run between now and the end of the season.

And what may perhaps excite Leeds fans further is that Monk’s admission to McPhail suggests that there could be more to come from the team now that they are buying into his philosophy and understand what he is trying to do at Elland Road.
