Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has positive words for Eric Dier.

Eric Dier is one of the best young players in the Premier League. Dier turned 23 only last month and is versatile enough to play as a defender or as a defensive midfielder.

The Tottenham Hotspur man has already earned 15 caps for the England national football team, scoring two goals in the process.

During the 2014-15 campaign, Dier started in defence for Tottenham, while last season he was deployed predominately as a defensive midfielder.

The former Sporting Lisbon star, though, is not guaranteed a place in the Spurs starting lineup anymore. Summer signing from Southampton, Victor Wanyama, has cemented his place in the team and has established himself as a partner for Mousa Dembele in midfield.

It is hard to see Dier reclaim his place in the Tottenham lineup on a consistent basis in the coming weeks, but manager Mauricio Pochettino has given him reasons to be optimistic.

“For different reasons I am very happy with Eric Dier,” Pochettino told Football.London. “Two and a half years ago when he arrived at the club, he was a player that remember in my first official game, against West Ham, he scored in injury time.

“He started to play like a centre-back next to Younes Kaboul and then Kyle Naughton was sent off and he moved to right-back. Then he finished like a winger, because the goal was unbelievable.

“Then [young players] develop different possibilities to play, in the U21s and then in their second season here. But that is very important. Eric is very young and every time he’s in a different position it doesn’t affect his performance.

“He plays well like a full-back and like a centre-back and he plays well like a midfielder and that is a big advantage. He’s a very good player for us.”

Dier has to work hard to re-establish himself in the Tottenham starting lineup. Given the talent and quality he has, one can envisage him playing at White Hart Lane for a long time.
