Stuart Pearce believes Newcastle United have the strongest squad in the Championship.
Speaking live on Sky Sports Now at 11:26 on February 8th, ex-Newcastle defender Stuart Pearce delivered his verdict on his former club’s promotion hopes, and shared his confidence that Rafa Benitez’ side can finish inside the top two positions of the Championship table.
Should Newcastle have moved for Everton man in January as an alternative to Townsend?
The Magpies have experienced a difficult month or so, with a succession of performances underlined by inconsistency, and their exit from the FA Cup at the hands of League One side Oxford United.
They are still sitting top of the Championship table, however, with a one point lead over second placed Brighton & Hove Albion, and more importantly, a six point advantage over third placed Reading – with a game in hand over Jaap Stam’s men.

And Pearce, who made 52 appearances for Newcastle, told Sky Sports Now how he is confident that his former side will achieve promotion, despite the difficult nature of the Championship:
“They have got the squad, probably the strongest squad in the league. The fanbase is sensational there, we know home and away they take absolutely massive numbers. But it’s an unforgiving league, you’ve got to keep going and keep going, there are 46 matches in this league – it’s a tough league to keep winning in, and there are no easy games. But they’ve got the tools to get out of this league without a doubt, and I think they will go up automatically.”

The North East outfit now face back-to-back away games at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich City in the league, before a pair of home matches against Aston Villa and Bristol City respectively.
