Five Premier League left-backs Liverpool could target this summer

Though James Milner has often done well at left-back, Liverpool clearly need to strengthen their options this summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s first full season with Liverpool has threatened to be something special, but now appears to be in danger of somewhat fizzling out with a title push seemingly now beyond them.

Having shown glimpses of being ready to conquer the domestic game once again, the Reds hierarchy must surely realise that not investing in the squad over the summer would be a mistake.

One position where Liverpool look desperately short of options is at left-back. Alberto Moreno has done little to convince fans that he is good enough, while Jon Flanagan’s torrid time with injuries meant that a loan move was probably the right decision.

James Milner has done well in a previously unfamiliar role, but supporters would be forgiven for being incredibly disappointed if the new season rolls around and Klopp has no choice but to use the former England man in the back line.

With that in mind, here are five defenders currently plying their trade in the Premier League that could perhaps be signed in the summer to fill the void…

Kevin Wimmer

Though Kevin Wimmer is much more comfortable in the middle, he has played on the left for both club and country in the past. The London Evening Standard has suggested that Tottenham will listen to offers for the Austrian at the end of the season, so perhaps they could land a bargain.

Kieran Gibbs

The Arsenal man has struggled for opportunities since Nacho Monreal’s arrival at the Emirates, so it perhaps would not be that great a surprise if he looked to move on in the near future. He may not be a marquee acquisition, but he could be a solid addition to Klopp’s squad.

Aaron Cresswell

The former Liverpool trainee has not been at his best with West Ham this term, but a return to his boyhood club could have an extremely positive impact on his form. On his day, there are few better crossers of the ball and his delivery from set-pieces would see the Reds ask plenty of questions of opponents.

Andrew Robertson

Andrew Robertson has previously been on Liverpool’s radar so it would hardly be a surprise if they revive their interest in the near future. Hull had wanted £12 million for him last summer (via Daily Mirror), but they will surely have no grounds to command such a fee if they are relegated this season.

Ben Chilwell

Another player who has been on the Reds’ wishlist is Leicester’s Ben Chilwell (via Mirror). The 20-year-old is still young enough for Klopp to develop the attributes within his game that would make him a brilliant addition to Liverpool’s squad. He may need time to settle – he is still struggling to earn opportunities for the Foxes – but he appears to have a huge amount of potential.
