When Tottenham Hotspur were last linked with Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, Mauricio Pochettino laughed off the rumours.

Back in October last year, Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino laughed off rumours that his side could move for Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero in January.

Sky Sports ran with the story suggesting that Spurs were interested in the City hero, but Pochettino vehemently denied the rumours.

Indeed, Tottenham showed no intention to sign Aguero, but all of a sudden the Argentine’s future at the Etihad Stadium has fallen into doubt.

The arrival of Gabriel Jesus at City has forced Aguero out of Pep Guardiola’s first-team line-up in recent weeks.

And Aguero, himself, admitted that City could look to move him on next summer.

For Spurs to make a move for the 28-year-old would take a significant change of transfer policy, but it would undoubtedly be a signing which could take them to the next level.

Tottenham have tended to bring in young players, who Pochettino feels he can develop.

Spurs have a stringent wage policy in place, which means that they refuse to pay more than £100,000-a-week to any player.

Aguero would almost certainly demand more than this to move to White Hart Lane, and if he did arrive Spurs would have to increase the salaries of some of their key players.

The likes of Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Kane and Dele Alli could all feel they were entitled to significant pay rises if a new signing was brought in on more money than them.

However, Pochettino has stated that he wants to turn Tottenham into one of the greatest teams in the world and to do this, in the mega money world of modern day football, they will almost certainly have to change their wage policy.

Tottenham have competed well in the Premier League since Pochettino took charge but, ultimately, they came up short last season – and look likely to fail in their chase of Chelsea this time around.

The signing of a player like Aguero would announce a new era at Tottenham, ahead of their move to the new stadium, and if there is any possibility of making it happen, then Spurs should seriously consider changing their approach and attempting to secure a deal.
