Leeds United crashed out of the FA Cup against Sutton United yesterday.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 30th January, that he totally understands why Garry Monk made so many changes in the FA Cup.

Leeds were beaten by Sutton United yesterday, in what was one of the biggest upsets in the fourth round.

The Whites made a number of changes to their starting line-up, and Leeds’ fringe players failed to impress against the non-league side.

Leeds looked well off the pace throughout the contest, and ended up losing 1-0 against Sutton.

Monk has been heavily criticised for one of the first times in his Leeds career, for putting out a weakened line-up.

However, Rodgers insists that he completely understands why Monk made so many alterations.

“I look at an example yesterday, which is Garry Monk,” the Celtic boss said, “I understand exactly what Garry did. Garry is playing a team he thinks can win the game, but he also has to be mindful that this one of the best opportunities that Leeds have to get back to the Premier League.

“To get back there is vital. He has players that have played a lot of games this season. The game is on an astro turf pitch. And if he goes into that game with a full squad and two or three get injured, that can have a massive impact on their chances.”

Leeds are currently in fourth place in the Championship table, and are aiming to consolidate their place in the play offs over the coming weeks.

Leeds are next in action on Wednesday evening, when they take on Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
